Jefferson County was named for President Thomas Jefferson, this county was created from a portion of
Comanche county in Oklahoma Territory and the southwestern corner of the Chickasaw Nation. Ryan is
the site of the first Jefferson County courthouse, which was built in 1894 by the Chickasaw Nation.
However at statehood, Waurika was named the county seat, due to it being on the 98th Meridian, which
served as the dividing line between Indian Territory and Oklahoma Territory which ran through Waurika.
Jefferson County offers many annual events include the Waurika Volunteer Firemen Rattlesnake Hunt,
the Waurika Art Show, Waurika Chamber Rodeo, the Terral Melon Jubilee, Ryan Rodeo, Ryan and Brick
Street Day's.
The Chisholm Trail Historical Association is located in Waurika, and two publications, A History of
Jefferson County and Post Offices in Jefferson County, offer written historical accounts of events, people
and places in Jefferson County.
Jefferson County has a desirable business economy, top-ranked educational systems, vibrant cultural
and recreational opportunities, with great rural characteristics. Travelers will find there is something fun
